Good Will Running

(Morgan Finlay)

> from Latitude (2012)

Summer's been and gone and the rains have set in
We come when tides are low and now they're out again
Looks as though we're leaving just as fast as we can make
May our good will outrun our past mistakes

For a certain time the open will bring us peace
But questions always gonna drift on up with the breeze
And it won't take too long to wonder what we're fighting for
With our brothers dying despite our trust in the Lord

When cannons cut our sails and the rats have dug in
When rations we've been saving ain't enough for ten men
Skies above turn frightening man our ghosts are on the prowl
Looking to find us with our weapons down

Now the captain's aim is any port in the storm
For he says there'll be pirates coming round the horn
With our luck we'll harbour in a brave new land
Only time and chance left to bring us in

Good will running down

Summer's been and gone and the rains have set in
We come when tides are low and now they're out again
Looks as though we're leaving just as fast as we can make
May our good will outrun our past mistakes

Factor In

(Morgan Finlay)

> from Latitude (2012)

Seems that you thought that this song was sad
When in fact I just pooled all the memories I had
Must have seemed a bold fool, though my pen was true
When I factored in the thought of you

Just a lonely voice singing about these dreams
And the way there ain't nothing quite as simple as it seems
When you said it made you scared, well mercy me
Baby factor in the things I've seen

There between the lights on the waterline
Did you walk up to me on the urge of a sign?
Must have been a strong wind up and carried you
Made me factor in the sight of you

Maybe when I talked about the loves gone bad
This was just what you expected from a music man
Must have been the pretty notes, made you stop to see
What was factored in the likes of me

All the things that we've done, might one day become
Just a factor of my love for you

Allez Allez

(Morgan Finlay)

> from Latitude (2012)

I came out of the jungle under a steady rain
There were blood trails behind me, and a knife through my brain
And it was on the brilliant river that I ran upon the truth
Where my fault stood beside me, staring out of my cocoon
There is always a reason these things go like they do

I was weeks at the roadhouse, I took shots to kill the pain
I awoke to the lessons I was bound to learn again
Didn't time overtake me, unburden me it's true
I came around a sort of corner, I reached out for things I knew
Now and then came a whisper, but sometimes it screams at you

Through the changing of seasons, I march despite it all
Under cover of darkness, I listen for the call
And it's wonder and torture with every hill I take
What a fortunate soldier, clambers over his mistakes
All these thoughts I consider, as I swim back into the fray

Across a bridge
Along a shore
The skies born
Some years before
Steel fence that holds
The cliffs at bay
Unlocks the point
I’d put away

Security
A bolder aim...
The roads I run never the same
I’m not sure I’ll get what I paid for

Let down my guard
To touch her face
Gave up my heart
To keep my place
I cupped my hands
Shielded my eyes
But no big love for me
But no big surprise

Security
I’ll be ok...
You and my love out of the way
I’m not sure I’ll get what I paid for

A dot in space
A satellite
Watch down over me
On through the night
Longer the train
Further apart
Know where I am
Know where to start

Security
You wretched scheme...
You’ll break my heart before my dream
I’m not sure I’ll get what I paid for
I’m not sure I’ll get what I paid for

zensong

as bright of a day as then
a feeling of mutual zen
the light that no one can ignore
rose softly from my bedroom floor

the touch of a greater thing
spellbound, completely honest
the ropes that I was up against
so gently held me in

and the band played on, the same old song tomorrow sings
and I'll love you, though an inch or so from my heart
for today, for tomorrow knows

tie me up to something
so I don't wash away
melt me into rhythm
colour me out of grey

blessed in my salvation
she has lit my eyes ablaze
lover gone with morning
and daylight come again

and the mind plays on, the same old song tomorrow sings
and I'll love you, though and inch or so from my heart
for today, for tomorrow knows

as bright of a day as then
a feeling of mutual zen
the light that no one can ignore
rose softly from my bedroom floor

and the band played on, the same old song tomorrow sings
and I'll love you, though an inch or so from my heart
for today, for tomorrow...

Blessing and Burning

(Morgan Finlay)

> from Shifting Through The Breakers (2007)

winter chill, late in the day
lonely horse comes without a sound
little whispers clear the way
follow the dust trails into town
come to lay his tired head down

the blessing of time…
the burning of youth…
blessed by things that only come and go,
burned by the truth…
blessed be the dream…
burned into you…
from the steppes of these fields of gold,
to the fires by the river

on the ridge, roll the wheels
out of the valley, on the edge of her seat
little schoolgirl looks around at the 1870s
so many things in store

the blessing of time…
the burning of youth…
blessed by things that only come and go,
burned by the truth…
blessed be the dream…
burned into you…
from the steppes of these fields of gold,
to the fires by the river

from waterfalls through canyon walls, an echo
smoke signals never seen, never far behind

the blessing of time…
the burning of youth…
blessed by things that only come and go,
burned by the truth…
blessed be the dream…
burned into you…
from the steppes of these fields of gold,
to the fires by the river

Seattle

from in here
seems like empty streets alone
could read my mind
flashing past to where I don’t know

faded
is the presence of your silence
to move with me today
out across the lights of Union Bay

breathe you
in the darkness of your eyes
that never looked away
I’d never learned to love you slow, did you?..
In Seattle lives a space I’m going through

Lean into me
the feeling deep inside of a Parasuco dream
turned into the very thing I need
will I feel
the sunshine of our secrets own me that way
if Sea-Tac lets me stay for one more day

breathe you
in the darkness of your eyes
that never looked away
high above the cobblestone I know
pieces of a man I’ve grown to you
in the shade your heart has won
the patterns of the sun
sweeping me through Pioneer Square
in Seattle there are things that just ain’t there

my endless rain, my quiet hours
the heights I know can bring me down

the window
giving quiet little shadows
to roll across the room
filling in the space where we begin
the empty bed I’m lying in
tomorrow
when you open up your eyes
I’ll betray another life
the things I get, the things I know for true
in Seattle there is not another you

The Way It Is

(Morgan Finlay)

> first released on Splice (2004 EP), then on Everything Will Work Out Right (2005)

You and your open face
Betrayed a wisdom you’d been dealt
By heaps of heartbreak
While I laid it on the way
That makes you feel like someone else
I’ll make your body sing

And you sense instability
I’m a pretty simple read
Escape at its purest
With you I could be anything
I am affected by your seed
So this might be different

I’m coming through
I’m watching everything
I’m going through
The way you are with me

Maybe this is called
Turning a corner on yourself
There’s shades of green, but then
you’re not supposed to know
How to believe in something else
There’s groundwork falling

To everyday man
Something unspoken enough
That I can’t see it
Wrapping my heart around
Something as simple as love
Yet so uncommon

I’m coming through
I’m watching everything
I’m going through
The way you are with me

And as I came around
You up and left me for yourself
What a wise decision
Something like nothing new
I made this all up anyhow
So I’ll stay hopeless

But I’m coming through
I’m watching everything
I’m going through
The way you are with me

The way you are with me
The way it is with me

Far Beyond Words

(Morgan Finlay)

> first released on Splice (2004 EP), then on Everything Will Work Out Right (2005)

If the world could be an open book
My life would be a word
A nice word if you use it gently

And now you see me as I am
Going through another phrase
you’re right there reading over my shoulder

Fortune has its way
Of repaying
The love you give comes back to you
In a way that is far beyond words

If words alone could fix a broken wing
Or mend another heart
Then all this talk could make it better

You brought me back up on the road
You brought my boat on into shore
You know it’s hard to thank you near enough

Fortune has its way
Of repaying
The love you give comes back to you
In a way that is far beyond words

If the world could be an open book
My life would be a word
A nice word if you use it gently

And now you see me as I am
Going through another phrase
You’re right there reading over my shoulder

Fortune has its way
Of repaying
The love you give comes back to you
In a way that is far beyond words

Night At The Mercury

(Morgan Finlay)

> from Shifting Through The Breakers (2007)

the Monet looks back at me
from walls that cannot see
gonna stay here when I lock the door
cross the lobby and return the key

smoke streams smell like change
in which way I don’t really know
maybe checkout will make a difference
anything to take me home

shifting through the breakers
white skies pure as snow
the sheets my father packed me
flap quietly where I go

when I grow old and tired of t-shirts
in some ways, I already have
maybe I’ll belong to Jesus
anything to take me home

anything anything yeah

The Reason Why

(Morgan Finlay)

> first released on Uppercut (2002 EP), then on Everything Will Work Out Right (2005)

If not the way it’s always been
More to the up than in between
In disarray I seem obscene
Masking my individuality

If not the greatest mark in time
Perhaps a day will change your mind
What did I say that was so mean?
Nothing but truthful have I been

And you believe in you
Like I believe in I
What’s beautiful to you?
Is that the reason why?

Well it’s not the moral that you see babe
What’s right for you may not be for me, ok?
This may seem cruel and unkind
But don’t let this enrapture unwind

For is not the sweet essence of life
Having the only dream you dream of?
Send all your caution to the wind
Let rays of light come shining in

And you believe in you
Like I believe in I
What’s beautiful to you?
Is that the reason why?

At the end of a bad dream
There’s a bright new day
Everyone will survive their own little way

And you believe in you
Like I believe in I
What’s beautiful to you?
Is that the reason why?
